Another student walks into an already over-populated Middle College office.

“What can I do for you honey?” can be quickly heard from behind the counter.

Though both secretaries have been flooded with work all morning, they somehow manage to make the time for the new arrival, further showing their dedication and drive to improve the working environment.

Middle College secretaries Adam Monsees and Charla Hampton are the glue behind the scenes that help keep the office going. Their chemistry and caring natures make the office an inviting place for students and everyone else to visit.

Though Adam has only been working at Middle College since Aug. 12, 2014, he has already made multiple improvements to the way the office runs and the systems that are in use.

Adam is in charge of the attendance that he runs through three separate systems. He also holds the records for the past seven years in case of any legal issues or documentation questions. Monsees sends attendance records to all the students’ home high schools each month.

“It’s a bit more challenging to get precise results because Middle College is not an average high school,” Monsees says. “So while one student may get out of school at 2:10 p.m., others may be here until 4 o’clock.”

Charla, on the other hand, is the bite of the organization, constantly moving forward and getting everything prepared in advance for upcoming events and never leaving a dull moment.

“She’s a hardworking, slightly frightening woman, but she is my favorite person to be around,” says Ashton Rose, a senior in the OTC Middle College program.

Charla has had many interesting experiences since starting at Middle College; however, the most interesting in her eyes happened just a few weeks ago in November.

“My most interesting experience was Open house,” Charla says. “I finally got to meet the parents of all my kids and let them know how they are progressing… or not progressing. I wasn’t scared though because Adam has been behind me since the beginning—most of the time making faces at me.”

Adam and Charla had trouble remembering how they first met but said that they felt as if they have known each other their entire lives.

Charla and Adam’s constant humor and light heartedness have established the perfect flow that keeps the Middle College office humming.

Potential Middle College students who look forward to coming here can expect to experience this warmth and chemistry as well because neither Adam nor Charla see it in their future to leave Middle College anytime soon. They plan to continue working off each other’s strengths and weaknesses for many years to come.

“If Charla ever did something that could get her in trouble at work,” says Adam, “I would take the blame instead to protect her.”

“He would,” Charla replies. “But I wouldn’t allow it.”
